To Believe ….. Or NOT To Believe

I can’t think of one singular reason to believe Roger Clemens’ latest denial regarding steroids and human growth hormone (HGH) usage.

For me, the preponderance of evidence or testimony is clear. On one side, we have a man who’s been pressed and squeezed by federal agents ….. and investigators for Major League Baseball. Let’s be blunt, just remove George Mitchell and his cronies from the equation – my 12 year-old could probably lie to their faces and convince them it’s the truth.

However, interrogations with federal law enforcement authorities are serious business. Questions are asked multiple times, from multiple sources and in multiple contexts. Thus, it’s pretty difficult to get away with trying to subvert the processes of an investigation.

Look, agents didn’t just sit down with Brian McNamee and say “tell us your stories,” and simply walk away with oodles of notes upon hearing “and they all lived happily ever after.” This guy (McNamee) was most certainly grilled for hours – each time. If he was lying, investigators would find a hole.

Also, he entered into a “proffer” with authorities, which assures the information he provides will never be used against him in a criminal proceeding. This further substantiates McNamee’s credibility. Combine this with the corroborated “truths” he’s already told and I’d say he makes a good witness.

Then, you have Roger Clemens’ account. By the way, his account, to date, is essentially a ….. “I didn’t do it.” Well, I feel better and much more informed, now. I’m so glad Roger Clemens hasn’t gone out on a limb or stared down a single television camera …. let alone the presence of investigators.

When you’re guilty of something, there’s TWO viable options ….. admit it or say nothing, at all. Well, it’s pretty easy to figure out which route Roger Clemens has chosen. I can’t say I blame him ….. but, I still don’t believe him.

When attorneys, representatives and agents start proclaiming the “truth will come out at the appropriate time” ….. rest assured, their dodging the bullet. Just look back at Michael Vick, Jamal Lewis and others in similar situations.

On one hand, you’ve got a guy who’s cooperated with everyone. On the other hand, you’ve got a guy who hasn’t cooperated with anyone. Who are you gonna believe?
