Free The Birds, I mean Pirates

July 01, 2007 | WNST Interns

As one of the charter members of the Free The Birds Union 2131, I think I can unequivocally say that we Baltimorons are the inspiration behind the Pittsburgh Pirates Fan Protest held on Saturday, June 30.

It was nice to see some fairly decent coverage on ESPN (with a little nod to our rally), although they and other media outlets reported the Pirates walkout to be only 300 strong, with protesters being consistently booed by other Pirates fans.  Knowing how under reported the success of Free The Birds was participation-wise, I will just be happy that in another place in this world, there are baseball fans passionate enough to voice their hope of a better future.

My memories of our protest day are up with the top five sports memories of my life.  If you couldn’t be there last September, take a look at what you missed.

Hey, maybe there is still hope for us.  Tony Blair stepped down as British Prime Minister after overstaying his post for nearly a year.  Come on Pete, take some pointers from Tony!!!  When you’re done, you’re done.  We’ll give you a good send off, I promise.
