Where’s the parade, Baltimore?

It was announced today that Cal Ripken has been named a Special Sports Envoy by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, who said the Orioles icon is “America’s MVP”.  What a wonderful honor to bestow on one of Baltimore’s favorite sons.

But, has anyone else noticed the surprising absence of a city-sponsored parade down Pratt Street?  Throughout my life, the City has thrown celebrations for major sports accomplishments: the Ravens Superbowl Victory, 2131, you name it and the City celebrated like the team’s biggest fan.

Along with the apathy coming from the warehouse for anything fan-friendly for the O’s, this lack of interest from City Hall is another sign that baseball has become an afterthought to the City.  Baseball was the once great unifier and Sheila Dixon’s lack of action to sponsor something fun and positive for the City is extremely short sighted in an election year.
