Ward Earns Patriot League Offensive Player Of The Week Award

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland senior attacker Justin Ward was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the third different Greyhounds player to win the honor in the last four weeks.

Ward had eight assists and four goals in two games last week, helping the Greyhounds extend their record to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League. Earlier Monday, Loyola moved up to No. 1 nationally in the USILA coaches and Warrior/Inside Lacrosse media polls.

Last Wednesday at Georgetown University, Ward had a goal and assisted on four others as Loyola rallied for a 10-9 victory over the Hoyas. Three of his assists came in the second half after the Greyhounds trailed 7-5 early in the third quarter.

He then had three goals and four assists on Saturday as Loyola beat conference-foe Lafayette College, 21-4. His seven points and three goals were both highs for Ward this season.

Through games of Sunday, March 23, Ward leads NCAA Division I players in total assists with 30. He is also tied for the team and Patriot League lead in total points with 39, matching the accumulation of fellow attacker Nikko Pontrello.

The award is the fourth offensive player of the week award that the Greyhounds have earned this year, following two by Pontrello and one by Matt Sawyer. Loyola has earned a total of 14 Patriot League weekly honors this season. It is the second conference weekly award of Ward’s career; he was an ECAC Lacrosse League Offensive Player of the Week last season.

Ward and the top-ranked Greyhounds continue Patriot League play with the first of back-to-back road games on Saturday, March 29, in Hamilton, N.Y., where they will face Colgate University at 12 noon.

Sawyer, Fletcher, Runkel Grab Patriot League Weekly Awards

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For the second week in a row, three Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse players won weekly honors from the Patriot League. Matt Sawyer, Joe Fletcher and Jack Runkel won the offensive, defensive and goalkeepers of the week honors on Monday following the Greyhounds’ 14-7 win on Sunday night over then-No. 4 Duke University.

Loyola (5-1 overall) moved up to a tie for second in the USILA coaches’ poll and second outright in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse andLacrosse Magazine media rankings.

Sawyer tripled his previous career-high on Sunday night against the Blue Devils, scoring a game-best six goals for Loyola. He tallied four goals before halftime, helping the Greyhounds to an 8-4 lead at the break, and he tallied extra-man goals in both halves.

Entering the game, the Waxhaw, N.C., native entered the game with eight total goals, four last season and four in the Greyhounds’ first five this year. His previous best of two goals came in the season-opener at the University of Virginia.

Fletcher’s defensive honor is his second in three weeks. Against Duke, he picked up seven ground balls, helping the Greyhounds win the possession battle, and he caused a turnover. He had primary man marking responsibilities for the Blue Devils’ Jordan Wolf. The All-American entered the game leading Duke with 12 goals and five assists, but Fletcher held him to one goal.

Runkel earned his third-straight Goalkeeper of the Week honor, making nine saves against the Blue Devils while yielding just seven goals. Over the Greyhounds’ last four games, wins against Towson, Holy Cross, Lehigh and Duke, the senior from Fairfield, Conn., has directed the defense in allowing only 20 goals while he has been on the field.

Loyola steps back into Patriot League play this weekend when it hosts the U.S. Military Academy at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Laconi, Pontrello, Runkel Receive Patriot League Weekly Honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Three Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse players – short-stick defensive midfielder Pat Laconi (defensive), attacker Nikko Pontrello (offensive) and Jack Runkel (goalkeeper) – earned weekly awards from the Patriot League on Monday after the Greyhounds defeated then-No. 14 Lehigh University, 14-7, on Saturday afternoon.

Pontrello and Runkel earned their honors for the second week in a row, while Laconi is the second Greyhound in as many weeks to receive the Defensive Player of the Week honor, following in the footsteps of fellow co-captain Joe Fletcher.

Laconi scored a pair of goals in the game at Lehigh, matching his career-high set just over a week before in a game against Towson Unviersity. He also caused a turnover and was part of a Loyola defense that held Lehigh to 29 shots and only 20 on goal.

Pontrello recorded his fifth multi-point outing in as many games this year and his fourth in a row with three or more goals. The junior attacker scored four goals, all in the first half, including three in a row during a second quarter that saw Loyola outscore the Mountain Hawks, 4-0. He has scored 19 goals this season, already eclipsing his previous seasonal best of 16 from last year. His 3.8 goals per game are best in the Patriot League and fifth in the NCAA.

Runkel was tabbed with the weekly goalkeeper honor for the second consecutive time after making 13 saves and allowing just seven Lehigh goals on Saturday. In Loyola’s last three games, Runkel has yielded only 12 goals to Towson, Holy Cross and Lehigh. He has played to a 7.81 goals against average and a .585 saves percentage.

Loyola, which moved up to No. 5 nationally in the USILA Coaches and Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Media Polls and fourth in the Lacrosse Magazine rankings, hosts No. 4 Duke University at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, in a game that will air nationally on CBS Sports Network.

Loyola Men’s Lacrosse Sweeps Patriot League Weekly Awards

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After two victories in which the Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse team outscored Towson University and College of the Holy Cross, 36-8, four Greyhounds swept the Patriot League weekly awards on Monday.

Nikko Pontrello was named Offensive Player of the Week; Joe Fletcher, Defensive Player of the Week; Jack Runkel, Goalkeeper of the Week; and, Brian Sherlock, Rookie of the Week.

Pontrello tied and then reset his career-high in goals last week, matching his previous best of four on Wednesday afternoon in a 20-4 defeat of Towson. He eclipsed that mark with a six-goal effort Saturday afternoon in the Greyhounds’ first-ever Patriot League game, a 16-4 win over Holy Cross.

The junior from Marlton, N.J., tallied goals in the first and second quarter before scoring four in a row at the start of the third. Five of his six goals came during the Greyhounds’ 14-0 run that put the game away. In four games this season, Pontrello has scored 15 goals, two off his personal-best of a season ago. He is averaging 3.75 goals per game and 4.75 points per game, the 11th and 18th best marks in NCAA Division I.

Fletcher and Runkel led a Greyhounds’ defense that gave up just four goals in each of their wins and put together a total of four shutout quarters of lacrosse.

The League’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Fletcher averaged 5.5 ground balls and 1.5 caused turnovers in the two games. After recording three and two, respectively, against Towson, Fletcher set a career-high with eight ground balls against the Crusaders.

Through Loyola’s first four games, he leads the team with 18 ground balls and is 18th in the nation with an average of 2.0 caused turnovers per game.

Runkel put together a solid week between the pipes for the Greyhounds, playing more than 107 minutes and allowing five combined goals for a goals against average of 2.79 in the victories. He stopped eight shots against the Tigers and 12 versus Holy Cross, an even 80 percent of the shots on goal he faced in the two games.

Against Holy Cross, the Fairfield, Conn., native led a defense that held the Crusaders scoreless for a stretch of more than 46 minutes. This came after the Runkel-led Greyhounds shutout Towson in two separate quarters on Wednesday. He has saved 56.5 percent of shots on goal this year and has played to a 7.80 goals against average thus far.

Sherlock is the second Greyhounds player to earn Rookie of the Week honors this year following Romar Dennis’ nod two weeks ago. Sherlock, a redshirt freshman from Long Island, scored twice in each of Loyola’s wins last week and also had a pair of assists against Towson.

A transfer who sat out the 2013 season with an injury at the Unviersity of North Carolina, Sherlock has scored six goals and assisted on four this year. He also has been a valuable two-way midfielder for the Greyhounds, starting on the first midfield line and running several shifts on the face-off wings and defensive possessions. He has totaled 10 ground balls this season, fifth on the team.

Loyola continues Patriot League action on Saturday, March 1, when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for a 12 noon game at Lehigh University. The game will air live on PatriotLeague.tv.
