ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior Jared Bernhardt tallied a career-high eight points, finishing with a hat trick and career-best five assists to pace No. 7 Maryland to a 14-9 victory Saturday afternoon. Senior Louis Dubick also finished with a hat trick, while Logan Wisnauskas and Anthony DeMaio added two goals and two assists each to push Maryland (6-1) to its third road win this season.
After a low-scoring opening frame, the Terps took control in the second quarter scoring five consecutive goals to take a 7-2 lead into the break. Four of the goals came in the final five minutes of the quarter, as Maryland took advantage of extra possessions to carry a five-goal lead at half.
The Great Danes answered in the third, scoring four of five goals in the quarter to crawl back within two as the final 15 minutes began.
Maryland slammed the door in the fourth with a six-goal tear, a season-high for a single quarter this season, to squash any comeback hopes from the hosts. Albany managed to get back within two with 7:23 remaining, but three straight goals to end the game sealed the deal.
The Terrapin defense held an opponent to under 10 goals for the fifth time this season, thanks in part to a nine-save effort from Danny Dolan in the win. Maryland’s faceoff unit held the advantage once again, finishing 17-27 on the afternoon led by a 12-20 day from Justin Shockey.
Maryland will return to action next Saturday, March 16 when the Terrapins host No. 11 Villanova at Maryland Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 1:00 pm and the game will be streamed on BTN2Go.
