Hopkins makes NCAA tourney, will face No. 7 seed Notre Dame

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins (8-7) will travel to seventh-seeded Notre Dame (8-6) in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Tournament it was announced on Sunday evening. The Johns Hopkins-Notre Dame game will take place on Sunday, May 12 (7:30 pm) and will air live on ESPNU. Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame both earned at-large bids to the tournament after each fell in its respective conference championship game. The Blue Jays dropped an 18-17 decision to top-ranked Penn State in overtime in the Big Ten Championship game, while the Fighting Irish lost to Virginia, 10-4, in the ACC title game.

The winner of the Johns Hopkins-Notre Dame first round game will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at Hofstra on May 18 (time TBA). The winner of the Hopkins-Notre Dame game will play the winner of the Duke-Richmond first-round game in the quarterfinals. Duke is the number two seed in the tournament.

Johns Hopkins is making its record 47th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and is one of three Big Ten teams in the 17-team bracket as Penn State and Maryland are also in the field.

Johns Hopkins boasts a 71-37 all-time record in the NCAA Tournament with nine NCAA titles to its credit. The Blue Jays’ 71 wins, 47 tournament appearances and 18 championship-game appearances are all national records.

This will be the sixth all-time meeting between Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame with all five previous meetings also coming in the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays have won four of the previous five meetings, including first-round tournament victories in 1992, 1996 and 2007 and a quarterfinal win in 2000. Notre Dame topped Johns Hopkins in the 2001 quarterfinals.
