COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List Thursday in a release made by the organization’s offices. The Bowie, Md. native is one of 46 players nationwide to be named to the watch list after a ferocious start to his final collegiate season.
Cowan leads the third-ranked Terps in scoring and assists, averaging 16.2 points per game and 4.2 assists per game through the first month of the season. Cowan has reached double figures in all but one game this season, and has finished with five-plus assists on five different occasions.
The Preseason All-Big Ten honoree was sensational at the Orlando Invitational November 28 through December 1, averaging 24.0 pts on 51-percent shooting, 4.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 3.0 rebounds to earn the tournament’s MVP plaudits. Cowan was named NCAA Player of the Week and Big Ten Co-Player of the Week for his efforts.
The Oscar Robertson Trophy is given out annually to the outstanding men’s college basketball player by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). The trophy is considered to be the oldest of its kind and has been given out since 1959.
Cowan and the rest of the Maryland men’s basketball team return to action on Saturday, December 7 when the Terps host Illinois (6-2) to open Big Ten Conference play.
