ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore forward Jalen Smith has been named Big Ten Player of the Week after a career week in which he led No. 15 Maryland to a pair of road victories against Northwestern and Indiana.
Smith averaged 27.0 points on 17 of 27 (.630) shooting while making 6 of 11 (.545) from beyond the arc, in addition to 11.0 rebounds/g.
In the opening game of the week, Smith posted a career-high 25 points and added 11 rebounds, while knocking down all nine free throw attempts. Smith scored 21 points in the second half as the Terps rallied from a 14-point deficit.
Smith then followed that up with a spectacular performance at Indiana in which he tallied 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including four 3-pointers. He added 11 rebounds for his third straight double-double.
The Baltimore native is making a strong case for All-American status, averaging 17.7 points and 9.4 rebounds in Big Ten play. He is also shooting 57-percent from beyond the arc through nine conference games.
Smith and the Terps return to action Thursday when they host No. 18 Iowa for an 8:30 tip on Big Ten Network.
