PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – University of Maryland senior running back Ty Johnson has been named to the watch list for the 82nd annual Maxwell Award, it was announced on Monday.
The Maxwell Award, which originated in 1937, recognizes the top Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player in the country regardless of position.
Johnson is the first Maryland player to be on the Maxwell list since Stefon Diggs (2013 & 2014). He’s the first Terp running back on the list since Da’Rel Scott in 2010.
Johnson led the Terps and ranked eighth in the Big Ten with 875 rushing yards in 2017. During his junior campaign, Johnson averaged 6.4 yards per carry, which ranked third in the conference, and his 132.7 all-purpose yards per game average was fourth best in the league.
A Cumberland, Md. native, Johnson surpassed 3,000 career all-purpose yards and 2,000 career rushing yards last season. He enters his senior season ranking among the Top 15 all-time at Maryland in career all-purpose yards (3,287), career rushing yards (2,129) and career kick return yards (813).
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Awards will be announced October 29, 2018, while the three finalists will be unveiled November 19, 2018. The winner of the 2018 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 6, 2018. The formal presentations of the award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 8, 2019.
