TOWSON, Md. – A big win for Towson University football leads to big awards as two Tigers were selected as CAA Players of the Week. Robert Heyward is the CAA Defensive Player of the Week while Aidan O’Neill earns CAA Special Teams Player of the Week.
This is O’Neill’s fourth career conference weekly honor and second of the season, having one back on Sept. 3rd, while Heyward notches his first-ever CAA weekly award.
As a team, Towson has seven CAA weekly honors this season, including three for Tom Flacco, two for O’Neill and one each for Heyward and Shane Simpson.
Heyward and O’Neill helped Towson notch its first victory over a top-5 team since 2013 as the No. 20 Tigers crushed No. 7/5 Elon 41-10. That win puts Towson in a tie for second place in the CAA at 5-2 with one week to go in the regular season.
Heyward was an important part of a defensive effort that held Elon to 10 points, tying the lowest amount scored by a Towson opponent this season. The redshirt junior linebacker led all players with 13 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss, adding a sack.
O’Neill set some new milestones on Saturday, including scoring his 50th career field goal and setting a new Towson single season record for field goals in a season, currently having 20. In the game, the junior hit a pair of 45-yard field goals and was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points.
Heyward, O’Neill and the Tigers will get ready to take on James Madison on Saturday, Nov. 17th at 2 p.m. at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.
