TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women’s basketball team will open the 2019 NCAA Division I championship tournament against the University of Connecticut at Gampel Pavilion on Friday, March 22 in the Albany Regional. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time and will be televised on ESPN2.
The pairings were revealed Monday afternoon during the Women’s Basketball Selection Show. Towson earned the No. 15 seed while UConn was seeded second. The winner advances to meet either No. 7 Rutgers or No. 10 Buffalo in Sunday’s second round.
Towson defeated Drexel, 53-49, to win its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship in program history last Saturday. The win also secured Towson’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Towson’s championship victory secured its first 20-win season since 2007-08. This squad is the second team in program history to accomplish 20 wins. In the preseason poll the Tigers were voted to finish eighth and completed the regular season tied for third overall.
The 2018-19 season was the first winning season since 2011-12. Towson won the most CAA regular season games (11) since 2007-08. The 17 regular season wins were the most since the 2008-09 season. This team is also one of seven teams in program history to win 17 or more games.
Nukiya Mayo and Kionna Jeter were named to the CAA All-Tournament team with Mayo earning Most Outstanding Player honors.
Jeter was named to the All-CAA First Team while Mayo was named to the All-CAA Second Team. Janeen Camp was named to the All-CAA Rookie Team. Diane Richardson was the CAA Coach of the Year. Jeter and Camp earned a spot on the All-CAA Defensive Team.
