Towson’s Flacco finishes fifth in 2018 Walter Payton Award voting

TOWSON, Md. – Towson University quarterback Tom Flacco set his mark in FCS play this season, finishing fifth in the 2018 Walter Payton Award voting, announced on Monday.

Flacco, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Offensive Player of the Year and All-CAA First Team quarterback finished the 2018 season with 3,251 passing yards, 28 passing touchdowns, 742 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. The redshirt junior currently stands in the top-25 in FCS in completion percentage, completions per game, passing efficiency, passing yards per game, passing yards per completion and total offense.

Flacco helped lead Towson to a playoff berth in 2018, helping the Tigers go 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the CAA to tie for third place in the conference. Towson’s victories include taking down then top-15 teams Stony Brook, Elon and Villanova.

The voting consisted of sports information directors, broadcast/print media and others. All voters selected a top-5. Flacco earned seven first place votes and finished the highest in the voting among all CAA players.

The 2018 Walter Payton Award, which will be given on January 4th, has been narrowed down to three finalists: Chandler Burks of Kennesaw State, Devlin Hodges of Samford and Easton Stick of North Dakota State.

Earlier in the season, Flacco was named one of 25 finalists for the award, the first finalist since Terrence West in 2013.
